Why Dubai will remain unforgettable to Aiza Seguerra

By Florence Pia G. Yu, Deputy Web Editor
Published: October 11, 2008, 09:01

Philippine child star-turned-singer-actress Aiza Seguerra has grown up, but she has definitely not forgotten how to inject fun and humour into her schedule.

In fact when asked about her first impression of Dubai, she replied that it is like a scene out of Star Wars. "I felt like I have stepped into an episode with Luke Skywalker...desert everywhere!" the 25-year-old performer told Gulf News in an interview during her first ever Fans Day in Dubai at the Chikka Grill at Marco Polo Hotel.

Her first stop to beat the heat? Ski Dubai. The experience turned out to be her most memorable in Dubai so far, she said.

"I learned to ski here for the first time in my life!" she said, adding that rushing down the slopes after a one-hour crash course made her feel nervous and excited at the same time. "I felt like I was going to fall any time!"

The popular performer was taking time to unwind in between mini concerts in Abu Dhabi and Dubai this week. She was at the Chi @ The Lodge in Dubai on Sunday evening for an intimate concert featuring songs from her latest international album Open Arms, which earned a gold record award in Singapore.

Fans in the UAE couldn't seem to get enough of the petite performer during her first concert early this year, so she is back for this second performance. "I feel happy that people here have given me a warm welcome," she said.

And before she leaves, she will be taking a piece of Dubai with her. Does she have a souvenir in mind? "Definitely some belly dancing costume for my mum," she said, chuckling, adding that it was a special request.

After her UAE gig, Aiza will be in Singapore to promote her album in music stores like HMV and Tower Records. She will also perform in Singapore for the musical play Avenue Q.

"I'm excited about this project because it is my first time to step into international theatre," she said. The play runs from October 31 to November 16.

The most challenging part about this play? "Playing black US child star Gary Coleman complete with the accent," she said, adding that it helped that she could relate to Coleman's life as a child star.

The Philippines practically watched Aiza grow up ever since her stint in the TV show Eat Bulaga, shortly after competing in Little Miss Philippines in 1987. She was only three years old when she entered showbiz.

Does Aiza have any more dream gigs she wants to fulfill? There is one, she revealed. She would like to have a concert in the middle of a lush forest "with the Philharmonic Orchestra...and fireflies lighting the stage," she said.

Did you know

• Aiza loves to travel but is a little scared about flying on airplanes
• She is a nature lover and has recorded a song in a multi-artist album to save the environment
• Because she loves nature, she considers green New Zealand as a perfect travel destination
• She likes to make poems when she is on a creative high
• She has made several songs for her life partner but have kept them private
• She says she is hesitant about making those songs public. "After all, you are your own worst critic," she explains

Quick fire

Name the song closest to your heart
Rhapsody by Paganini, especially the Somewhere in Time theme.

Top three songs in your iPod
Nicole Nordeman's songs: Help me believe, Every season, Legacy.

Do you have any bad habits?
I am really lazy at taking a bath.

How about good habits?
When I do take a bath, I am very thorough.

First thing you think of when you wake up
'Where's the tissue?' I always need to blow my nose first thing in the morning.

Top three favourite songs in your new album
Vincent, Home, I can't make you love me

What book you are reading now?
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Someone gave it to me to read, saying it is really good. I did and now I am hooked.

Favourite musical instrument
Guitar. Although I also love the piano and violin.

Most important lesson learned in life
People are different. You just have to respect those differences

Aiza may pinagmanahan
SANGA-SANGANDILA Ni Veronica R. Samio
* * *

Aiza rakes in P2.08M at 'Singing Bee'

abs-cbnNEWS.com - July 12, 2008

Singer Aiza Seguerra won a million pesos for a second time on Thursday, after retaining the championship at ABS-CBN's  "The Singing Bee", a game show that pits contestants against each other in guessing correctly a song's lyrics. Seguerra's total winnings now amount to P2,080,000.

Seguerra had a difficult time in the final round against her challenger, Freestyle band vocalist Jinky Vidal.  Both of them missed the lyrics to the final line-up of songs, including hits made popular by Donna Summer and Jose Mari Chan.

With time running out, "Singing Bee" host Cesar Montano declared that Jinky would no longer be able to catch up with Seguerra on points--Seguerra therefore remained the "Singing Bee" champion and taking home P1,040,000.

Just the night before, the singer had already won a million pesos and forty-thousand pesos.

A former child star, Seguerra reigned as the show’s champion for three nights in a row, before she went on to win the million-peso prize on Wednesday, July 9, after she filled in the missing lyrics of five songs.

Seguerra got the chance to be next the show's winner after singer Rachel Alejandro gave up her title as the defending champion since she needed to fly abroad for her other commitments. Alejandro was  the show’s first celebrity P1 million winner. The first ever Singing Bee Philippines millionaire was Steno Padilla.

Before becoming the newest Singing Bee millionaire Wednesday night, the former child star defeated her co-contestant, fellow singer Bituin Escalante.

Seguerra joined the “Singing Bee” also to promote her latest album titled "Open Arms."

In interview during the show, Seguerra told host Cesar Montano “Open Arms” will be released either this month of August or September.  "Open Arms" is the follow-up to Seguerra's previous album, "Para Lang Sa 'Yo".

Seguerra made one of the most notable comebacks in Philippine showbiz when, after her acting career nosedived as she entered adulthood, she  made a name in music industry with her monster hit song "Pagdating ng Panahon"

Seguerra said her "Open Arms" album was produced by an international music firm from Singapore and will be released by ABS-CBN's music outfit Star Records.

Seguerra only had 17 days to record the10-track album, which features revivals of old hits such as "Open Arms," "Time After Time," "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," "At last," "Vincent," "Smooth Operator," "Home," "Journey," and "Longer."

Seguerra said that she will be flying to Singapore to promote her album right after her performance for the stage play "Avenue Q" ends.

Seguerra is a contract artist of Star Records but on a per album basis only.

Presently, Seguerra’s “Sa’yo Lamang” is the theme song of Kapamilya's hit Koreanovela "Romantic Princess."

A storm named Aiza

A new storm has hit the country. It is the Aiza Seguerra concert last May 15 at R&B Rafters music lounge in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Entitled “Summer Strum,”  the concert was produced by Dennis R.G. Quila under Quarter to Six Productions.

Ticket holders got in early   to get a good seat. But even if the show was already halfway, people were still lining up at the ticket booth despite a SRO advisory. They didn’t mind standing up for the entire show (or sitting on the stairways). They even commented: “Super sulit pa rin!.”

“More, more, more!” cheered the audience when the show was about to end, which prompted Aiza to extend a couple of performances. With Aiza on stage was a group of talented musicians composed of a guitarist, a percussionist and a violinist. Her repertoire that night included “Every Little Thing,” “Runaway,” “If I’m Not In Love,” “I Can’t Make You Love Me,”  “Separate Lives,” “Kiss From A Rose,” “True Colors,” “Time After Time,” “One Thousand Miles,” “Hands To Heaven,” “Waiting In Vain,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Till There Was You,” “Here There and Everywhere,” “In My Life”, “Ipagpatawad Mo”, “Bilanggo,” “Magasin,” “Para Lang Sa ‘Yo,” “El Bimbo” and the ever popular and hit single “Pagdating Ng Panahon” musically arranged by show producer Dennis R.G. Quila himself. When Aiza sang her signature song, everyone in the audience seemed to have been caught up in a trance.

Aiza’s Sta. Rosa, Laguna show was presented by Globe Telecom, R&B Rafters Music Venue and Quarter to Six, in cooperation with Audiophile-Shure, Center for Pop Music, After Hours KTV and Pepsi-Gatorade.

At the moment, Aiza is working on an album produced by the Singapore-based S2S Production and will be released Asia wide. She’s working on 13 tracks of covers and originals. Target release date is early this month. She’s soon to renew contract with Star Records for a live recording album. For the third time, Aiza performs in the repeat of the Broadway play, “Avenue Q,” June 12 to 22 at the RCBC Plaza Makati.

AIZA, NAG-GOWN

At least I get to entertain people, especially kids who are watching," sabi ni Aiza. Tabuneknek

AIZA TO RECORD AN ALBUM IN SINGAPORE

From a number of artists submitted, Aiza Seguerra was chosen by a Singaporean recording company to record an album in the Lion City to be released in Asian market.

The former child star is about to record 13 songs, mostly cover versions. This is going to be Aiza’s first album for international release which, according to her, is one of her dreams.

Aiza said that this break is very timely since she currently has no acting or recording projects, only live shows on bars. She last appeared on the Judy Ann Santos soap "Ysabella" and her last album was "Para Lang Sa ‘Yo" which was released last year under Star Records.

AIZA Seguerra releases new album "Para Lang Sa 'Yo (Songs Inspired by Ysabella)" Paul Mata, Philippine Entertainment Portal, September 21, 2007

After a four-year hiatus from the recording scene, Aiza Seguerra releases her new album, her first under Star Records. The album is titled Para Lang Sa 'Yo (Songs Inspired by Ysabella) and was released yesterday, September 20, at the Packo's Grill in South Triangle, Quezon City.

Ysabella is the ABS-CBN television series starring Judy Ann Santos, Ryan Agoncillo, Derek Ramsey, and Aiza herself.

The 10-track album contains revivals and original compositions. "Para Lang Sa 'Yo" is the carrier single, composed by Jonathan Manalo. He also served as the producer of the album.

"The general idea of the album is bringing Aiza back into the mainstream. [Because] she's known for her soothing and cooling voice," Jonathan told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during the media launch.

Also in the album is the theme song of Ysabella, "Huwag Mong Iwan ang Puso," an Ogie Alcasid composition and originally sung by Pinoy Dream Academy grand scholar Yeng Constantino. Other revivals in the album are Louie Ocampo's "I'll Be There for You" and a Didith Reyes hit, "Bakit Ako Mahihiya."

"Song choices for the album are inspired by the love angles of Ysabella.

Aiza contributed one song to the album, her original "Sana Di Lang Puro Sana" with former Rizal Underground member and PEP blogger, Mike Villegas. Other originals are "Persistent Rain" by Christian Martinez and Cynthia Roque, "Walang Sayang" by Moy Ortiz, and "Kasama" by Ricky Sanchez.

Extra features of the album are music videos of the tracks "Para Lang Sa ‘Yo" and "Walang Sayang."

Ryan Agoncillo provided beautiful photographs of Aiza for the album.

Aiza encourages her fans to get a copy of her new album in record stores nationwide. Star Records is also making the album available worldwide.

"Unawain natin si Christian"--Aiza

Rey Pumaloy, Abante, Sept. 22
